Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov or as he is moree commonly known as Peter the Great was the greatest Russian rulers in histroy. His great reign over Russia began on May 7th, 1682 and lasted until February 8th, 1725. Peter had complete total power over all other Russians. This type of rule is known as absolute rule. Most absolute rulers had used their power to help themselves rather than his people; however, Peter had cared about the people of Russia and used his power to help his country.
Tsar Alexis had died on January 29th, 1676 which had left the throne to his older half-brother Feodor III who was sickly and weak. Feodor hadn't had any children and another one of Peter's half-brothers, Ivan V, had been next in line for the throne. Ivan had been chronically ill and his mind was infirm so Boyar Duma had chosen Peter, who was only ten years old at the time, to become ruler.
Peter aimed to modernize Russia. Peter traveled to western Europe to see how their ports and architecture were like and used the ideas to help modernize Russia. He had improved Russia's ports so that sea trad ewill be easier and more efficient. Since Russia is largely along water so Peter had known that the ports needed to be improved as well as their shipbuilding.
Peter the Great had signed a temporary peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire who had initally controlled the land Russia was established on. He had been determined to capture the Balkan Sea from the Swedes. His army had been ill prepared to fight the Swedes, their first attack had ended with a disaster. As a result of the attack, the Swedes came in from Sweden and attacked Russia. Peters northern armies had held off the Swedes and drove them back into Finland. Russia then went and captured Estonia, Ingria, Livonia, large area Finland, and part of Karelia. Russia paid two million riksdaler and surrendured most of Finland, in return Peter odtained a warm-water port that allowed much trade routes for Russia.
